Citing ChatGPT and Other Generative AI

As using ChatGPT and other generative AI becomes more common, so too does the need to consider acknowledging its use in our work. APA 7th edition has provided new guidelines for citing work influenced by or generated by the output of ChatGPT or other generative AI.

This feedback covers the following scenarios:

  1. Quoting or reproducing text generated by ChatGPT or other AI in your papers

When prompted with “Is the left brain right brain divide real or a metaphor?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that although the two brain hemispheres are somewhat specialized, “the notation that people can be characterized as ‘left-brained’ or ‘right-brained’ is considered to be an oversimplification and a popular myth” (OpenAI, 2023).

  • Parenthetical citation: (OpenAI, 2023)
  • Narrative citation: OpenAI (2023)

These guidelines will likely be updated as our understanding of generative AI and its uses continues to increase.
